What Can System Thinkers Learn from Tech Governance
When we talk about the use of technology we inevitably run into questions about ethics, regulation, and overall governance. Recently, this entanglement has once again emerged as a topic of public interest on how Canadian society navigates advancements in artificial intelligence and its sweeping impacts.
In this conversation, we unpack the dynamic between tech and governance from a systems thinking perspective. We'll have two discussants for the session: Bianca Wylie and Sun Lynn Myat, moderated by Zaid Khan. The discussants will share different framings, provocations, and critiques on how we observe and understand the discourses between governance systems and technology systems.

Bianca Wylie is the director of T&S Advisory, a firm that helps leaders make decisions about the use of technology in their organization.
Bianca worked for several years in the tech sector in operations, infrastructure, corporate training, and product management. Then, as a professional facilitator, she spent several years co-designing, delivering and supporting public consultation processes for various governments and government agencies. She founded the Open Data Institute Toronto in 2014 and co-founded Civic Tech Toronto in 2015.

Su Lynn Myat is experienced in conducting research on social issues. She has worked with international organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and various civil society organizations. Holding a Master’s in Public Administration and a Master of Design in Strategic Foresight and Innovation at OCAD University, Su Lynn brings a strong interdisciplinary approach to her work, combining policy insight with design-led innovation.
Su Lynn’s thesis project - Participatory towards Anticipatory (PtA) - aims to instigate a paradigm shift in how we think about technological futures. She makes the argument that technological choices are social choices, and part of broader sociopolitical and sociocultural phenomena. As such, decisions about technology should be made by society as a whole before these technologies become widely adopted.
Zaid Khan is a graduate of OCADU’s Strategist Foresight and Innovation Program (2020). Zaid works as a strategist across a wide variety of public and private sectors.
